Your Morning Coffee 09/30/2022

Updated: Oct 4, 2022

Good morning! And happy birthday to my wife!

Welcome to your morning coffee! May our Heavenly Father rejoice over us, as he has promised to do. May we be your faithful, obedient children, Father. You claim us as so much more than your possessions. You are too kind to us, too good to us. Please help us to rest in your promise to be our Father. In the name of your son, Jesus the one who saves us, and by your Spirit who makes us more like him, help us to delight in each other as you delight in us!

Your Morning Song: "Calling Out Your Name" by Rich Mullins

Your Morning Scripture: Romans 12:10

Love one another with brotherly affection.

Outdo one another in showing honor.

...

What kind of people are we? What are the peculiarities that set us apart from others? How are we recognized by others, as a church?

"Outdo one another in showing honor."

As a church we ought to be marked, in part, by how we celebrate each other. Whether it is a birthday, a time of getting everyone together for a potluck, or just reaching out to each other to thank each other in whatever ways that we can.

In a world that constantly conditions us to think only of ourselves, we should be different. In Jesus's name we ought to be people who pursue each other. Who have you checked in on lately? Someone you know have a birthday? Celebrate them somehow! Thank someone. Praise someone. Take someone out to lunch, or coffee. Do all of this for the purpose of blessing them, and for no other reason.

I love this translation of Romans 12:10 for how it paints a very clear picture of what God is commanding us to do for each other. Don't just celebrate and honor, but try to make a game of it. Outdo each other. With a wink and a smile one-up each other for the sake of lifting them up and experiencing God's delight at the whole thing.

Is this how we love each other? Is this how we are known? Let's not just obey God in this, loving and honoring and celebrating each other in this way. But let's make a marvelous game of it, outdoing and one-upping each until our community can't help but laugh and want to join us. And by our love for the family of God we will be inviting unbelievers into the unexpected joy of desperate dependence on Jesus Christ.

Who can you celebrate and honor today? Ask God to give you a name!
