Your Morning Coffee 01/18/2024

Good morning!

Welcome to your morning coffee! May our Heavenly Father continue to graciously, but insistently call out to us to come near to Him, to seek Him, to come daily to eat and drink from His word. Father, we are quick to forget to read your Bible. It is so full of life and light. And yet so many of us neglect your word, and live in the dark. And we don't need to. Forgive us as we have forget to read your Bible as you have commanded us to. Share your delight with us as we read your Bible as you have commanded us to. Forgive us as we repent. Encourage us as we obey. And in Jesus's name, by the Spirit, help us to see your Will in your Word, and live it every day. Amen.

Your Morning Song: "Cornerstone" by Toby Mac ft. Zach Williams

Your Morning Scripture: Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet

and a light to my path.

...

It's late. I walk through the house shutting lights off, tidying up, throwing a toy or two into the toybox. And then I head up the stairs to go to bed. And then I remember something that I forgot. Doesn't matter what it is. That isn't the point.

The point is this. I bet I can go get that thing or do that thing without turning any lights back on. So I try. I'm sure some of you have done this. I hope so. Otherwise I'm the only one here who has learned the hard way that this really doesn't work. I stub a toe. I step on a toy I missed. At best I have to go slower to avoid accidents, and eventually I sheepishly use my phone as a light. I could have just turned on a light. Flick of a switch.

How many of us are living our lives without the daily, soul and bone deep influence of the Bible? How many of us are making important choices and forming major opinions without the perfect wisdom of the Bible?

How many of us are living dark?

This devotional is not written for those who do not believe. It makes sense that they would not use the Bible in their day to day lives. It makes no sense that so many of us who claim to have been claimed by Christ, treat the Bible like headache medicine, use in case of pain. Or like a fire-ax in a box, break glass in case of emergency.

The Word of God, the Bible, is God's special revelation to the world about who He is and what He is up to. It is for our everyday living. Not only for Sunday mornings. Not only for special occasions. Not only for funerals.

"Dear author of this devotional, sir, you seem to be quite worked up over this! Why not a gentle reminder and encouragement to live our lives by the light of the Bible? What makes you type/speak as if everyone is living in the dark?"

Because the harsh truth is that most of us are. Most of us are living in the dark. And we, and our loved ones, are suffering unnecessarily because too many of us won't call our self-indulgence what it is, sin, and repent of it. Because too many of us act like the Bible is too heavy to open on a daily basis. And the consequences are far worse than stubbed toes and stepping on Legos.

Too many of us are living in the dark. And we don't have to. And we aren't supposed to. And our Father in Heaven is grieved. Our Lord Jesus is grieved. And the Holy Spirit is grieved.

So maybe this is you. What can you do? Repent to God. Read His word. And rejoice as He changes your day to day life. Rejoice as He turns all the lights on and brings clarity, wisdom, maturity, and peace.

Maybe you're already living your daily life according to the light of the Bible. I know what God thinks about you.

Well done my good and faithful servant. Keep reading. Keep obeying. Keep rejoicing. Keep trusting. Keep seeking. Keep the faith. Well done! Well done!

May our light-full living

be a gift received,

that itself is giving,

light to those, by self, deceived.
