The Seed of Anger

Jesus Talks to Us About Anger Matthew 5 Series

"“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire." Matthew 5:21-22

The Seed of Anger

A seed of anger is a combination of an experience we resent and an act of retaliation.

Devote some time to reading the narrative of Cain and Abel in Genesis 4:1-16.

It will provide some foundational insight into how anger results from the combination resentment and retaliation.

Consider Psalm 37:8 as well:

Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!

Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.

Can We Stop a Seed of Anger?

Just as a seed needs pollination to grown, anger needs resentment and our action to grow and develop.

Proverbs 15:1 tells us:

A soft answer turns away wrath,

but a harsh word stirs up anger.

What Might It Look Like to Stop the Seeds of Anger?

Resentment requires the "re" part in order to survive.

Ephesians 4:31-32 says:

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

An angry activity requires the cooperation of our will to begin.

Consider Proverbs 16:32:

Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty,

and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.

TIPS TO HELP YOU LIVE THIS OUT:

FOLLOWING FORGIVENESS IS THE ANTIDOTE TO ANGER.

Colossians 3:12-13 tells us:

Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

LET GO OF YOUR ANGRY SENTIMENTS AND DON'T RE-TURN TO THEM.

Consider Ephesians 4:22-24:

Put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

ASK GOD TO HELP YOU TO NOT ACT ON YOUR ANGER.

Ephesians 4:26-27 tells us:

Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.

WITH GOD'S HELP AND POWER, COMBINED WITH COOPERATION AND SURRENDER, THE SEED OF ANGER WILL DIE.
