The King Has One More Move

Are you experiencing "Check" instead of "Victory" in your life?

In the game of chess, "Check" is called out when an opponent is facing defeat.

"Checkmate" means a king is captured and the game is over.

In this famous painting, it appears that a conquest is inevitable.

Yet, a chess expert took a careful look at the chess board depicted in the painting and realized that there was, in fact, one possible move left that would completely change the outcome of the match.

How about us? Are we experiencing situations in which all seems hopeless? When we feel there is no way out?

The King Has One More Move

These encouraging words from Jesus are recorded in John 16:33:

"I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

And I John 4:14 tells us: Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Remember that our adversary, the devil, is the "father of lies." His messages of hopelessness are simply not true.

The King Has One More Move

Be encouraged as you consider the many Scripture references to instances where Satan shouted out "Check" thinking victory was his. Yet the King responded to once more deliver his defeat.

  1. The Garden of Eden Satan was certain he could call out "Check" when he successfully lured Adam and Eve into sin. Yet God had one more move. Genesis 3:15

  2. The First Child, Cain Satan shouted "Check" once again when Adam and Eve's first child murdered his brother. Yet God had one more move. Genesis 4:25

  3. The Genesis Flood Satan declared "Check" when God decided to destroy the world with a flood. Yet God had one more move. Genesis 6:8, 17-18

  4. The Israelites Under Pharaoh Satan was certain once again that he could cry out "Check" when Pharaoh decreed that all of the male babies from among the captive Israelites would be destroyed. Yet God had one more move. Exodus 14:23-31

These, and many other narratives of real life histories from the Bible are recorded to give us heart. They help us remember that God's ways are often beyond our comprehension.

The King Has One More Move

Perhaps Satan most confidently called out "Checkmate" when God's Son, Jesus, was crucified on the cross. Yet once again, the King had one more move.

Jesus was resurrected and glorified, providing a way of salvation to all who believe and trust in His gracious gift of redemption.

Romans 10:9 says:

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Take heart in whatever circumstances you face in your life, you can trust that:

The King Has One More Move!

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. ~Philippians 2:9-11
