The Gift We Don't Get

What Is the Promised Gift?

Acts 1:8

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." Acts 1:8

The Promised Gift We Often Do Not Get

The Holy Spirit is promised...

We don't get the Holy Spirit because we don't understand the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is a gift promised by the most trustworthy person in the universe: Jesus.

We read in Acts 1:4-5:

And while staying with them he [Jesus] ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

The Holy Spirit is not a thing. The Holy Spirit is not an "it."

Like, Jesus, the Holy Spirit is a Person -- one of the three Persons of the Godhead: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

What if we obeyed?

We don't get the Holy Spirit because we don't want to wait.

Look again at Acts 1:4:

...He [Jesus] ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise...

Do you like to wait? Not many of us do.

But the Holy Spirit is a perfect gentleman. He waits for us to seek Him and to want Him in our lives.

What if we waited?

If we waited for the Holy Spirit we would:

  • GET to know the Holy Spirit.

  • UNDERSTAND the connection between patience and power.

  • SEE how the Holy Spirit always waits for us to allow the Holy Spirit to go first.

  • BE cut to the heart, asking God what to do instead of telling God to do what we want.

ACTS 2:38

AND PETER SAID TO THEM, "REPENT AND BE BAPTIZED EVERY ONE OF YOU IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST

FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF YOUR SINS, AND YOU WILL RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT."
