Keep the Main Thing the MAIN THING
Jesus Gives Us the Great Commission Matthew 28:19-20
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20
In ALL Way, and in EVERYTHING, Keep the Main Thing the MAIN THING!
Where Did the Great Commission Come from?
The Great Commission is rooted in God's creation.
We see all three Persons of God in Genesis 1:1-3:
In the beginning, God [the Father] created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God [Holy Spirit] was hovering over the face of the waters.
And God [the Son, the Word] said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
And in Genesis 1:26-27, we see whose image we bear:
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
What Does the Great Commission Look Like?
The Great Commission is a fulfillment of the Great Commandment.
We find the Great Commandment in Matthew 22:37-40:
And [Jesus] said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Is the Great Commission for Special People?
No! Let's look at Ephesians 1:15-23:
For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
Consider the WHO, WHAT, WHY, and WHEREFORE of the Great Commission:
WHO: Every person who is saved and baptized.
WHAT: Love God with your whole heart, soul, and mind.
WHY: Because it's who you are as a follower of Christ.
WHEREFORE: Go and make disciples, baptizing and teaching them
REMEMBER AS YOU LIVE THIS OUT:
WHEN WE COMBINE THE GREAT COMMANDMENT WITH THE GREAT COMMISSION, WE WILL SEE GOD WORK THROUGH US TO MAKE DISCIPLES WHO MAKE DISCIPLES.
